What is the Difference Between Used and Certified Pre-Owned?

The differences between used and certified pre-owned cars are easy to understand. CPO vehicles must meet strict qualifications, and they must also pass a comprehensive inspection. Plus, CPO vehicles come with warranty coverage for even more peace of mind. Although all CPO vehicles are technically used, not all used vehicles are CPO.

CPO vs. Used: Mercedes-Benz CPO Benefits

What is the difference between used and certified pre-owned Mercedes-Benz vehicles? Just for starters, a CPO Mercedes-Benz must have fewer than 75,000 miles, and it must also be less than six years old. If a given used vehicle meets these standards, it may be eligible for certification! Here’s what you need to know about the Mercedes-Benz CPO program:

  • Inspection: If a vehicle is eligible for certification, it must undergo a comprehensive multi-point inspection. In the event that damages are identified, any existing issues will be fixed with genuine OEM parts.
  • Warranty Coverage: Whatever remains of the initial Mercedes-Benz Warranty is passed onto you as the new owner. When this warranty expires (or, if it is expired at the time of your purchase), the Mercedes-Benz CPO warranty kicks in to offer one additional year of coverage with no mileage limit.
  • Roadside Assistance Coverage: All Mercedes-Benz CPO vehicles include 24/7 roadside assistance coverage. This protection is complimentary for as long as your warranty is active.
  • Vehicle History Report: Although we endeavor to make a vehicle history report available with every used vehicle on our lot, it’s worth noting that Mercedes-Benz certified pre-owned vehicles always include a comprehensive history report.
  • 7-Day/500-Mile Exchange Privilege: If you’re not completely satisfied with your CPO Mercedes-Benz, you may have the option to exchange it for a different vehicle within this time frame.

If buying a used vehicle with warranty coverage sounds like a smart move to you, don’t wait to check out our current CPO special offers.

What to Know About Buying a Used Car

Now that you understand the difference between used and certified pre-owned vehicles, you can probably guess that CPO models tend to cost more than their used counterparts. This being the case, you may decide that the monthly payments on a standard pre-owned vehicle are a better fit for your financial plan.  If you’d prefer to buy used instead of CPO, keep the following points in mind:

  • Private sellers probably don’t have to worry about their reputations, but that isn’t the case for dealerships. You’re better off buying used from someone you can trust.
  • If you’re buying used, it’s a good idea to have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic before you buy. If a private seller tries to prevent you from doing so, beware.
  • Sticker price is just one part of the bigger picture. Paying more now could help you save on service and maintenance costs down the line.
  • Search for data on specific models and model years before you buy. This can help you find the most reliable used car available.
