Any driver comparing the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class vs. S-Class is well on their way toward a more engaging drive! Although you may already know that there’s a significant gap between their starting prices, you may not be aware of all that separates these two models!  So, what is the difference between E-Class and S-Class sedans? And how can you be sure that you’ve found the right model for your Great Falls and Chantilly drives? Mercedes-Benz of Tysons Corner has all the answers you need.

What’s the Difference Between E-Class and S-Class Sedans?

  • With a base price of $94,250 MSRP*, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class represents the pinnacle of the Mercedes-Benz luxury car lineup. The E-Class, which starts at $54,050 MSRP*, offers its own stunning balance of features and value.
  • The 2020 E-Class lineup includes five models–three standard configurations and two AMG® builds. The 2020 S-Class offers even more potential for customization with a total of seven available models, including two which bear the AMG® emblem.
  • The S-Class is larger than the E-Class, but the difference is most easily noticeable in the trunk. The S-Class engine lineup is also generally more potent, although there is a certain amount of overlap between their offerings.

Performance: Mercedes-Benz E-Class vs. S-Class

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is available with four powertrains:

  • 2.0L inline-4 turbo
    • 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque
  • 3.0L V6 biturbo
    • 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque
  • AMG®-Enhanced 3.0L inline-6 turbo with EQ Boost
    • 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque
  • Handcrafted 4.0L AMG® V8 biturbo
    • 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque

The S-Class offers its own lineup of four potent powertrains:

  • 3.0L V6 biturbo
    • 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque
  • 4.0L V8 biturbo
    • 463 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque
  • Handcrafted 4.0L AMG® V8 biturbo
    • 603 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque
  • Handcrafted 6.0L AMG® V12 biturbo
    • 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque

Considering the overlap between these two models’ engine lineups, it shouldn’t be surprising to learn that they put up similar efficiency numbers. Although exact specs will vary depending on the engine and drivetrain that you select (both models are available with rear-wheel drive and 4MATIC® all-wheel drive) we’ve listed each model’s maximum EPA-estimated fuel economy here:

  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class Fuel Economy – Up to 23 mpg city, 32 mpg highway
  • Mercedes-Benz S-Class Fuel Economy – Up to 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway

Interior Dimensions: Mercedes-Benz E-Class vs. S-Class

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is about eight inches longer than the E-Class from bumper-to-bumper. Although both models seat five comfortably, the E-Class actually offers more rear legroom! However, since the S-Class offers a much larger trunk, it might be preferred by busy drivers and frequent travellers. Mercedes-Benz E-Class Dimensions

  • Legroom (1st/2nd) – 41.7 in. / 36.2 in.
  • Trunk Volume – 13.1 cubic feet

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Dimensions

  • Legroom (1st/2nd) – 41.4 in. / 34.1 in.
  • Trunk Volume -18.7 cubic feet

Although we’ve focused on the popular sedan styles for this comparison, both models are also offered as cabriolets and coupes body styles. Additionally, the E-Class is also available as a wagon!
