What Is Coolant?

Filling Up Coolant

Learning how to check your coolant level in Arlington only takes a moment, but you won’t really understand how important it is to do so unless you understand what coolant really is! Coolant helps to prevent your engine block from freezing in the winter, and it also prevents overheating when you’re driving in the heat! What is coolant made of? It’s either entirely antifreeze, or a mixture of antifreeze and water! Check the bottle you picked up at our parts department to be sure.

How to Check Your Coolant Levels

Coolant levels will gradually decline over time, so you should check on the cooling system at least once every three to six months. You can check your coolant level quickly and easily, without getting your hands dirty! Here’s how:

  • All you need to do is pop the hood and locate the reservoir. It’s usually clear, and if the liquid inside it is near the “full” line, you have nothing to worry about.
  • The color of the fluid will vary, but it’s likely to be blue, green, yellow, or red. If it’s low, add the appropriate coolant or coolant/water mixture.

Remember, you should never touch the radiator cap unless you’ve given the engine plenty of time to cool. It’s very easy to burn yourself here, so always err on the side of caution if you need to add more coolant. Learn more about your Mercedes-Benz service schedule to stay on top of maintenance.

When to See a Service Technician

Of course, a low coolant level isn’t necessarily the only thing you have to worry about. Here are a few other things to watch out for:

  • Especially viscous or sludgy coolant may indicate an internal gasket leak. If your gasket it leaking, you’ll lose coolant more quickly than usual.
  • Brownish or colorless coolant is an indication that you need to add fresh product. Flush the reservoir and check out our parts specials to save on your next top-off.
  • If your coolant has taken on a rusty tone, it may indicate a problem with your radiator. Schedule service and let us take a look as soon as possible.
