What Maintenance Does An Electric Car Need?

Mercedes-Benz EV Charging

If you’re thinking about getting an electric car or own an electric car and are wondering about electric car maintenance, it’s important to know how to keep your EV in top shape. EVs don’t require as much maintenance as a traditional vehicle. However, there are a few things to keep maintained and up to date. So, what maintenance does an electric car need? Let’s take a closer look at this in more detail below with Mercedes-Benz of Tysons Corner! For more information, feel free to contact us anytime!

Electric Car Maintenance Schedule

So, do electric cars need maintenance? Yes! Although they do not have the same components as traditional vehicles, some parts need to be maintained regularly. Let’s check out a few of the schedules you should follow for maintenance on electric cars below:

  • Brakes: EVs use regenerative braking, which uses the resistance from electric motors to slow down the vehicle. Electric vehicles also use traditional friction brakes; therefore, brake pads, rotors, brake fluid, and more need to be replaced. Generally, you should service your brakes every 7,500 miles.
  • Powertrain: the direct-drive transmission of your EV will need the fluid changed. It’s important to check your owner’s manual to be sure when to change the transmission fluid in your EV.
  • Coolant: Coolant is needed to cool down various components, such as the inverter, charger, and battery pack. Coolant helps your vehicle’s cooling system operate as intended.
  • Tires: Similar to other vehicles, EVs need tire replacement every 5,000-10,000 miles.

Now that you know more about the maintenance of electric cars, it’s important to learn more about caring for one of the most important parts of an electric car, the battery.

Electric Car Maintenance: Batteries

Batteries are one of the most important components of EVs; therefore, they’re also one of the most expensive. However, it’s important to note that the batteries in electric cars can last decades, anywhere between 10-20 years. Let’s review a few different things you can do to care for your EV’s batteries and keep them operating for longer.

  • It’s best to avoid extreme temperatures if possible. However, battery manufacturers have taken this into account and have designed them accordingly.
  • Although manufacturers have placed limiters on how much or how little their batteries can be charged, it’s best not to charged them fully, or let them drain completely.
  • It’s best to charge your EV at your home charger, as rapid chargers wear down the battery more quickly.

Although batteries are the most expensive component of electric car maintenance, many manufacturers offer comprehensive warranties so their customers are covered for long period of time.
