Mercedes-Benz is technically owned by Daimler AG, but for most of the last century, the two companies were considered to be more or less the same entity. Daimler now presides over a number of different brands, but there was a time following their early twentieth-century merger when the company was simply known as “Daimler-Benz”! Find out how both companies got their start below.
Daimler AG has a reputation for building some of the most luxurious vehicles in the world, and Mercedes-Benz is at the core of their lineup. Their headquarters is located in Stuttgart, a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Although the Daimler Motors Corporation started marketing the Benz Patent Motorwagen in 1901, the two companies would not become one until a merger occurred in 1926. Who owns Mercedes-Benz Stadium? Perhaps surprisingly, it’s not Mercedes-Benz! Mclean and Great Falls drivers should know that the home of the NFL Atlanta Falcons and the MLS Atlanta United is actually owned by the state of Georgia.
Although other carriages had been configured to offer some motorized capability, Karl Benz was the inventor of the first gas-powered automobile intended only for self-propulsion. Benz made subsequent improvements to the original design, and in 1888, the Model 3 went on sale as the first genuine automobile marketed to the public. Benz & Cie, the company that built the vehicles, grew dramatically in size as demand for automobiles increased! The name “Mercedes” would not be introduced until the Daimler Motor Corporation began to market Benz & Cie’s automobiles in the early 1900s, when they commissioned Emil Jelinek to design an engine that he decided to name after his daughter. Although Karl Benz would retire from his management position in the design department as early as 1903, he stayed on as a board member until the merger between Benz & Cie and Daimler took place in 1926. From that time on, the two would be inseparable.
Mercedes-Benz vehicles have come a very long way, but as in years past, they continue to point the way forward for the industry. Whether one looks toward the handcrafted engines that distinguish their high-end AMG® performance lineup, or toward advanced features like DISTRONIC PLUS® and 4MATIC® AWD, it’s clear that Daimler and Mercedes-Benz remain just as committed to innovation as ever.
